Dear Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell:
It has been one week since the mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton, and almost two weeks since the mass shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival. And, since that time — as with every other senseless and tragic mass shooting — the Senate has done nothing. Together, the people across this great nation call on you to do something.
Our hearts ache for the families and communities devastated by the violence and utter disregard for human life. These and other mass shootings could be avoided if Congress would address the easy and unfettered access to assault rifles — firearms with high capacity to kill that have no business in the hands of civilians and on our streets. Most Americans — including Republicans and NRA members — support efforts to curb gun violence.
Added to this is the hateful white supremacist rhetoric spurring both the Gilroy and El Paso shooters. The toxic mix of hate and firearms all too often leads to the same outcome: mass shootings.
This year, the House of Representatives passed common-sense gun measures to expand background checks and lengthen the amount of time for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) to complete a background check. You have refused to bring either bill — or any gun safety bill — to the Senate floor for a vote. Your inaction sends the signal that you prioritize guns and the gun industry, not people.
Leader McConnell, you must bring the Senate back from recess to consider S 42 and HR 1112 to prevent gun violence and ensure the safety of our communities before more people are gunned down for attending a festival, shopping for school supplies, attending school, watching a movie, frequenting a bar, or worshiping. Our lives depend on it. Do something.
